The Challenges facing Bulgaria

Strategic challenges

The strategic challenges facing present-day Balkans are a result of processes and policies that determine the degree of security in the individual countries and at a regional level. They are influenced by the management of latent and active conflicts of a different nature - ethnic, religious, economic, and political, that take place within or between the Balkan states. The security and stability in the contemporary Balkans are directly dependent on the interference of external factors (national states, integration communities, international organizations).

Geopolitical challenges

The geopolitical challenges facing the present-day Balkans stem from processes and policies through which significant global and regional factors sustain their territorial interests and form their spheres of influence. The most important among them are the EU, Russia, the US, Turkey, and China. The geopolitical impact of these factors is established through various means – economic (investment in infrastructure and energy projects), political (engagement with party and business elites), and cultural / traditional ones, such as the religious affiliation of compact groups of the population in the Balkan states. This results in a sustainable linkage with historical factors being traditionally significant for the region.

The project is funded by the National Science Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science and coordinated by the Institute of Balkan Studies and Centre of Thracology in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
